Women in Big Data (WiBD) is a global, inclusive community started as a grassroots organization in 2015. Its mission is to unlock latent potential, act as a catalyst for advancement, and empower equity allies of any gender. A broader diversity among leaders and practitioners improves big data’s use and function, leading to a better future for all of us. On September 7, WiBD launches the Brussels Chapter and kick-offs with a meetup about ‘The Data Governance Challenge in Big Data’. What can we expect from the WiBD Brussels Chapter?
Women in Big Data – Brussels Chapter
Valerie Zapico is the Founder and CEO of Valkuren, a data-tech company. She is recognized as an Inspiring Fifty female leader in Belgian Tech and leads the WiBD Brussels Chapter. “WiBD defines big data as a tool being harnessed at every level, in every industry today, to shape tomorrow. At Valkuren, we help businesses, start-ups, SMB’s, and corporates unlock the power of data through cloud, analytics, and artificial intelligence. While doing this, we strongly focus on gender equality and maintaining the human aspect. Besides, I participate in webinars and conferences where I speak about, e.g., big data, bias, analytics, and ethics in AI”, says Valerie.
Throughout her master’s in Statistics & Business Intelligence and career, Valerie has been stimulated by female and male role models to set and reach goals in the field of big data. That is something she wants to pay forward, so Valerie is always open to coaching new motivated people in the big data field and sharing her knowledge and experience to help them move forward in their careers. Valerie: “Starting and leading the WiBD Brussels Chapter allows me to strengthen my commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive big data community where people connect, engage, and grow.”
Meetup Women in Big Data
To jump-start the WiBD Brussels Chapter, Valerie created a Meetup group that already has more than 80 members and counting. The kick-off, and first Covid-friendly face-to-face event, is on September 7 at the Thon Hotel Bristol Stephanie in Brussels.
The Meetup starts with a welcome by Tina Rosario, WiBD EMEA Lead and Chief Data Officer at SAP France. Then, Valerie is going to provide insights into the roadmap for the WiBD Brussels Chapter. That is followed by a panel discussion about ‘The Data Governance Challenge in Big Data‘: How to find the right strategy? What are the tools you can use? Which mindset to adopt in your company? Besides Tina and Valerie, the panel consists of Elena Tsiporkova, Ph.D., Head of EluciData Lab, The Data & AI Competence Lab of Sirris, and Rima Farhat, Managing Director – Cloud First Lead Accenture Belux, and Belgian ICT Women of the Year 2021. The WiBD Meetup closes with a networking drink.
